The Lions fired Brayden Coombs when the last call was a scoundrel

ALLEN PARK, Mich. – The Detroit Lions fired Brayden Coombs special teams coordinator.

The team announced the move on Monday, a day after falling 1-2 to interim coach Darrell Bevell and 5-9 overall this season, with a 46-25 loss to the Titans.

The drive came a short Sunday in the loss to Tennessee on a false point on the fourth and 4th in Detroit 31. CJ Moore took the snapshot directly and was stopped a few steps away from the Titans.

The decision appears to have been made by Coombs without consulting Bevell.

“If we say, ‘Hey, we’re doing this,’ then I feel it’s important to get on with it,” Bevell said. “And sometimes when it goes in the opposite direction, there are times when you can really help yourself or hurt yourself, and I thought this was really an important moment.”

USA Today reported that sources throughout the league insisted that Coombs was not a good cultural fit, was often late for meetings, and was considered a self-promoter.

“I do not want to use these words from myself. We’ll just get through there, “Bevell said when asked about any other issues.

Former Detroit coach Matt Patricia hired Coombs in January after working with the Cincinnati Bengals for 10 seasons. The Lions fired Patricia and general manager Bob Quinn last month.

Detroit has struggled this season, but has been relatively strong on special teams under the 34-year-old Coombs.

Detroit hosts Tampa Bay (9-5) on Saturday.
