An Illinois lawmaker wants to ban the sale of violent video games, including Grand Theft Auto, as cars have grown in the state.
Rep. Marcus Evans Jr., a Democrat, has introduced a bill that would amend a pre-existing law banning the sale of certain video games to minors. His amendment would ban the sale of games with the object, including “theft of cars with a driver or passenger present,” according to the Chicago Sun Times. The amendment has not yet been made voted.
There have been renewed debates over the ban, after cars were recently hidden among young people.
“The bill would ban the sale of some of these games that promote the activities we suffer in our communities,” Evans told the Chicago Sun Times.
A 16-year-old man was arrested and charged on Monday with car charges. A few days ago, there were two 15-year-olds arrested and charged with the car, Fox 32 Chicago reported.
A former police officer was also abducted last week. The young perpetrators were found, but the officer said “tthese boys feel that they will leave immediately, especially since they are minors. ”
Video games being a cause of violence against minors is a hotly debated topic, with some believing that banning violent video games for children would help reduce crime, while others believe that video games do not contribute to aggressive acts in children.
