The Honduran delegation discusses the reconstruction and migration plan in the US.

Washington, United States.

In addition to access to the vaccine, the Honduran delegation in the United States discussed specific elements on the reconstruction plan and economic reactivation of our country, as well as the impetus of immigration actions for the Honduran community living in the Northern Nation.

The Honduran government’s discussion on these issues was with representatives of the government of US President Joe Biden. Dialogue was conducted with authorities from the White House National Security Council (NSC); Ambassador Roberta Jacobson, Southwest Border Coordinator; and with Juan S. González, Chief Executive for the Western Hemisphere, with whom they discussed current bilateral commitments and the new US administration’s priorities for Honduras and the region.

On behalf of Honduras, Foreign Minister Lisandro Rosales, the Minister General Coordinator of the Government and the Cabinet of Economic Reactivation, Carlos Madero, and the Minister of Presidency Ebal Díaz took part. The meeting was also attended by the respective ambassadors of the Honduran diplomatic mission in the United States and of the Representation to the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Suazo and Luis Cordero.

“President Biden knows the region very well, and in President Obama’s administration, he led the issue of the Northern Triangle as vice president,” the Chancellor Rosales when leaving the meeting.

He added that this good relationship continued even when Biden was outside of the government’s sphere. “Now as president he has set the tone for the importance of Central America and Mexico to him,” he emphasized.

Important approach

The Honduran delegation referred to the actions taken so far in the reconstruction processes and economic reactivation following the severe damage left on the national territory following the passage of the tropical storms of Eta and Iota.

During the conversation, the Honduras delegation also reiterated its thanks to the government and the people of the United States for the expressions of solidarity received to address the health emergency in the country due to the current pandemic and the families affected by natural disasters.

Likewise, they discussed the security results obtained and the figures in the State Department reports related to the drug trade in Honduras.

They also discussed the importance of drafting a memorandum of understanding for the exchange of information on operations that ensure security in Honduras and the entire region.

Addressing immigration issues, emphasis has been placed on the recent steps taken by the United States government to reform immigration and on the executive orders signed by Biden, which represent new opportunities for Hondurans in that country.

In this sense, the significant number of Honduran citizens covered by provisional benefits, such as TPS and Dhaka, was detailed, as well as the economic contribution that all Hondurans make to the economies of both countries.

“Honduras has always been and will always be an ally of the United States to generate opportunities in the country,” emphasized the Honduran ambassador to the United States. Luis Fernando Suazo placeholder image.
