In a meeting with media directors, the Minister of Industry and Trade and SMEs (Víctor-Ito-Bisonó) presented a report on the prices collected in different types of business units, where there is a huge difference in commodity prices between own supermarkets and between them and the markets.
To give an example of this wandering, the price of a kilogram of onion in supermarkets marks a dispersion of RD $ 51, showing a price range from $ 32.4 RD per kilogram to $ 79 RD, in the 12 largest supermarkets in the country.
That is, regardless of rising oil, fuel and shipping prices worldwide.
In the case of hot peppers, the difference detected is $ 15 between supermarkets and $ 11.7 in markets; while in bananas it is US $ 9 per kilogram in markets and $ 6.5 RD in supermarkets. With the pound potato, there is a dispersion of 19%. In supermarkets, prices ranged from RD $ 26 to RD $ 45 pounds in the first week of March.
An egg was sold for $ 4.7 RD to $ 7.4 RD and already in the first week of March was selling for between $ 7 RD and $ 8 RD per unit, with a dispersion of $ 2.7 RD in super ”and $ 1.00 RD in the markets.
In the case of rice, a staple food on the Dominican table, the dispersion detected was US $ 5 per kilogram between supermarkets; and RD $ 2.4 between markets. Regarding the variations in oil and fuel prices, it is explained that the Government has assumed a cumulative deficit of 1.27 billion US dollars. A list of the prices of the main goods (soybean oil, corn, wheat, fresh chicken, corn flour, pork, wheat flour and bread) was presented. In addition, the impact on freight transport, whose overall container transport index indicates an increase of 118.8% between 19 February and 28 August 2020.
