The former square employee reveals the original concept for Geno

Super Mario RPGGeno has been a hot topic of discussion in recent days, following the revelation that the character will once again receive a Thousand Fighter costume in Super Smash Bros. Final on the Nintendo Switch. I assumed that Geno might be off the table due to Sephiroth joining the game, but the revelation of the Mii Fighter suit confirmed that fans should not expect to see Geno appearing as a complete fighter. With the character in everyone’s mind at the moment, character designer Kazuyuki Kurashima took to Twitter to reveal some conceptual art of the character for his appearance in Super Mario RPG.

Images of conceptual art can be found in the Tweet embedded below.

It’s definitely interesting to take a look at what it could have been! Clearly, there were some interesting ideas about what the character might have looked like. The third image, in particular, seems almost reminiscent of Sonic the Hedgehog, which would make sense, given how popular the character was at the same time.

While art books have become more common in recent years, the video game industry has little experience when it comes to preserving its own history. As such, it is quite nice to see that these original models have survived in the years since. Super Mario RPGIts launch, since 1996. With the unveiling of Geno’s first works of art, it will be interesting to see if any of Mallow’s concepts have survived!

Owned by Square Enix, the appearances of Geno’s video games have been rare and rare in the last 24 years. While the character quickly became a fan favorite, he has since been demoted to small cameos Super Mario RPG, including in 2003 Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, and the Mii Fighter costume that appeared in previous Super Smash Bros. games.

What do you think about the art concept for Geno? Are you happy that Nintendo and Square went in a different direction for the character? Tell us in the comments or share your opinions directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp let’s talk about all the games!
