The first genomic NFT sold for science – and a statement

If there is one thing you can claim to be yours, you would think it would be your own DNA. A scientist, however, puts his own genomic data up for auction, using an NFT.

NFTs or non-fungible chips, they took the art world by storm as a method of identifying original digital works. Now, George Church intends to sell the first genomic NFT, which includes a high-resolution artistic representation of the genome and its resemblance, as well as the digital location of its complete genomic data, hosted on a decentralized server.

“Historically, genomic and health data have been monetized with a lack of transparency. That is, patients and consumers rarely have complete information about who has access to their data. However, the rise of the blockchain and NFTs has allowed a new model for how data can be held and monetized, ”said a statement on behalf of the Harvard medical professor.

Of course, this is not just any genome. As part of the human genome project and the personal genome project, the Church’s genome was the fifth entire human genome ever sequenced. Now known as the “Father of Synthetic Biology”, the Church was also the first person to make its medical records and genome available to researchers.

But scientists and researchers have not always asked for permission before taking advantage of such information, often taken from black and Native Americans. Most famously, Henrietta Lacks’ cancer cells were taken without her consent during medical treatment and became the source of the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized human cell line.

“By auctioning off its genome as NFT, Nebula Genomics and Professor Church are initiating a conversation around fair and transparent ways to generate money and share health data,” the statement said, referring to its own company. sequencing of the teacher’s genome and mentioning that part of the proceeds from the sale will go to genomic research.
