Police say a fire in the intensive care unit of a government-run hospital in western India has killed 10 babies

NEW DELHI – A fire broke out early Saturday in the intensive care unit of a government-run hospital in western India, killing 10 babies, police said.

A preliminary investigation suggests the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit, police officer VS Chavan said.

The Press Trust of India said the babies were 1-3 months old.

Firefighters rescued seven children from the newborn care unit at a hospital in Bhandara, a city in the state of Maharashtra, almost 1,000 kilometers south of New Delhi.
