The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested this morning a councilor of the municipality of Mayagüez known as Arnaldo J. Irizarry.
The federal agency made several arrests this morning, as confirmed Metro its spokesman, Limary Cruz Rubio. The official said seven arrests had been made in the federal authorities’ operation.
Although the charges against him were not disclosed, authorities have revealed a case of alleged fraud.
According to various media outlets, the investigation could revolve around a $ 9 million transaction by the Mayagüez municipality into hedge funds.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Puerto Rico is set to reveal charges today that Irizarry was arrested in a press release. The spokesman confirmed to this newspaper that the authorities will not hold a press conference.
In July 2019, the mayor of Mayagüez acknowledged to the country’s media that the FBI is investigating the transaction.
