Ford is no longer willing to sell you an old-fashioned three-box sedan. But if you live in China, it will offer you something that vaguely resembles one called Evos.

The evos was disclosure at yesterday’s Shanghai Motor Show, along with several other China-only models (including a review of the model Escort – the name continues!) Evos was developed for China, will debut in China, and Blue Oval does not intend to bring it to the US or Europe. But while we won’t get this particularly elongated notchback in our forest neck, we should recognize the Evos as a taste of the future. Because this is almost as close to the abandoned body style as Ford is willing to do.

In terms of profile, the Evos is the most crossovery crossover I’ve ever seen, because it doesn’t fit perfectly into any category. Although he shares many clues with Mustang Mach-E, Evos is not an electric vehicle, so it has longer front and rear sports, with a more pronounced hood and a disproportionately short cab. Outwardly, the design does not seem to be particularly efficient from a spatial point of view, although it is somewhat difficult to judge from the images.

If Evos were downstairs and dropped the hatch, it would be a sedan. On the contrary, if the roof line extended a little further before moving away, it would be a wagon. But, as it is, Evos is neither here nor there, fitting it perfectly for the crossover label. It’s “alternative rock” in the form of cars.

Ford says the Evos is “its first vehicle developed largely by a team based in China,” thanks to a new joint venture with Chinese company Changan Automobile. Like Mach-E, it is built on the Ford E / E system fully connected to vehicles, offering over-the-air upgrades and BlueCruise Level 2 technology for hands-free driving on “pre-qualified sections of divided highways”. C-V2X vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure communication is also included, which will be particularly crucial for advancing autonomy in China’s urban centers.

The focus on technology goes to inside with a massive glass plate spread over two displays, consisting of a 12.3-inch panel for the digital instrument cluster and a 27-inch 4K touchscreen for everything else. They are separated by an edge, but the overall effect is reminiscent of end-to-end display Byton was going to deliver in his cars. (And maybe – has anyone heard of Byton lately?)

Ford says that this infotainment system, based on Sync + 2.0, capitalizes on Baidu’s work in the field of artificial intelligence – capitalizing on a Partnerships between the two who have spent years. Reading between the lines, it is clear that Evos is the product of a numerous collaboration with Chinese production and technology companies, designed exclusively to capitalize on that market. IT’s Not surprise that the car is not intended for the West.

That being said, don’t be surprised to see a Ford that looks very similar to the Evos in your local showroom for the next few years. observation from what is claimed to be the future Ford Mondeo in Europe suggests that the sedan will be reincarnated as a crossover in its next life and there were noises Ford could very well do the same with the Fusion in North America. Welcome to the sedan of the future.
