Jeremy Fowler recently decomposed the key free agency moves for each NFL team into a feature for ESPN. What were his thoughts on the San Francisco 49ers? While the team has strengthened the offensive line with the re-signing of Trent Williams and the addition of Alex Mack and the re-signing of key players such as defender Kyle Juszczyk and defender Jason Verrett, the ESPN writer seems to be expecting a move to strengthen a another position.

“The 49ers are up to something at quarterback,” Fowler wrote. “They had extensive discussions with (Joe) Flacco, who succeeded with Kyle Shanahan during a visit last week before finally choosing Philly.”

San Francisco would also have been in the mix for Andy Dalton before the Chicago Bears signed the fullback. Fowler reports that the team spoke with Mitch Trubisky’s representatives before he joined Buffalo Bills. It looks like the 49ers are trying to improve on the backups behind starter Jimmy Garoppolo, who missed 10 games last season due to ankle injuries and 23 games in the last three seasons.

Fowler adds this nugget: “Rumors persist that Jacksonville quarterback Gardner Minshew II could be in their plans through the trade.”

While the “rumors” do not indicate the reported interest, it is an interesting statement. Minshew has 20 games of initial experience in his two NFL seasons, threw for 5,530 yards with 37 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in that period and is scheduled to win $ 850,000 in salary this season. It’s a business for an experienced backup.

Minshew started eight games last season, but the Jaguars are expected to recruit Trevor Lawrence with general no. 1.

As for the possibility to upgrade from Garoppolo, there are not too many options at the moment, apart from a possible dream or two.

“Watson would be one (option), of course,” Fowler added. “But he’s hard to deal with. So for now, San Francisco can focus on adding to the quarterback and adjust from there.”
