Infectologist Jesús Feris Iglesias said yesterday that any vaccine against COVID that is more than 70% effective is excellent for immunizing and guaranteeing the protection of the population.
It warns that in the current emergency situation in the Dominican Republic, the country must access any of those available for application, regardless of name and country of origin, as long as they exceed that level of effectiveness.
The researcher said that currently there are different vaccines that are applied and all have over 70% effectiveness, among which he cited CoronaVac which is produced by the Chinese industry Sinovac, that of Russia, Moderna, AstraZeneca and that of Pfizer, among others, approved for emergency placement.
He said the country is in a national emergency, with an epidemic that has taken many lives and left many consequences, hospitals and clinics are overcrowded with patients and there is no effective treatment, so the only solution is mass vaccination. of the entire population over the age of 18.
“At this time of national alarm, what we need to do is promote vaccination with all available vaccines,” said Feris Iglesias, stressing that what should be advocated is to advocate for all those who have adequate effectiveness for human protection.
Asked by phone, the infectologist responded to statements by the president of the Dominican College of Physicians (CMD), Waldo Ariel Suero, who warned that the union “is not convinced” by the AstraZeneca vaccine, because it is one of the most questioned in terms of its effectiveness and effects. secondary.
Suero indicated that CMD gives priority to Pfizer and Moderna vaccines because they have higher levels of coverage and efficacy.
The union member described the contracting of the AstraZeneca vaccine by the Dominican government as “hasty”, the first payment of which was made through a donation from the private sector worth 8 million US dollars.
In this regard, Feris Iglesias said that the president of CMD should talk about a technical health issue after consulting specialized medical companies, which may have determined that he did not do so before issuing his opinions.
Doubts
Suggestion.
Suero indicated that in a meeting 14 days ago with President Abinader, he stood firm on CMD’s position on the AstraZeneca vaccine and suggested that he prefer those of Pfizer and Moderna.
Harmful
He said that “we must try to make an effort and bring the least harmful to the population and what produces the greatest coverage.”
