Rapper Earl Simmons, better known as DMX, was hospitalized in White Plains, New York, after suffering a heart attack, his lawyer told CBS News. No details were provided on what could have caused the heart attack.
Attorney Murray Richman initially said DMX was removed from life and breathing on his own, but when CBS News later asked him to confirm the details, Richman said “I don’t know.”
DMX has been nominated for three Grammy Awards throughout his career, receiving two nominations in 2000 and one in 2001. He has also been nominated for several other awards, including a 2006 BET Award for Video of the Year, an MTV Movie Award in 2002 for the revolutionary male show for “Exit Wounds” and several MTV Music Video awards.
Support messages began to circulate quickly on social networks on the news about the state of DMX, many calling him “a legend” in the industry.
“The DMX story is so heartbreaking,” said Andrew Barber of Fake Shore Drive posted on Twitter. “It’s hard to explain how massive it was in the late ’90s / early’ 2000s. It touched people in a way I can’t explain.”
MMA fighter Jorge Masvidal posted a statement on Twitter that DMX previously gave to his fans: “When you collapse, come back, everyone here has gone through some nonsense and you never know what God wants to do for you until you need it. let him do something for you. “
