The company that has the rights to rescue objects from the Titanic has indefinitely delayed its plans to retrieve and display the ocean liner’s radio equipment due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a document released by the firm Friday for the court has been filed.
RMS Titanic Inc. mentioned the “growing difficulty associated with international travel and logistics, and the health risks this poses to the expedition team.”
The Atlanta-based company also noted that it has been without its main source of income for nearly a year due to the closure of exhibits of its massive collection of Titanic artifacts due to restrictions due to the coronavirus. They have only opened a few scattered exhibits in the country, but they record limited attendance.
Despite this, the company claims to be financially sound. He noted that the expedition to recover the radio equipment remains a priority and will “take place as soon as reasonably possible”.
The company believes displaying the radio will help preserve the ocean liner’s legacy and honor the passengers and crew. The radio, known as the Marconi wireless telegraph machine in 1912, sent emergency calls to nearby ships that helped rescue 700 people from lifeboats.
RMS Titanic Inc. filed their document with federal court in Norfolk, Virginia, which is presiding over the salvage issues related to the Titanic. The company said it will continue to work on a plan to fund the expedition as required by the maritime court.

But even without the pandemic, the expedition is far from guaranteed. The company has filed a lawsuit with the US government over the legality of the company.
The Mystery Behind the Titanic
Federal government attorneys claim the mission is prohibited under federal law and an international agreement with Britain. Lawyers say the company must seek government permission to remove the radio because the sunken ocean liner is recognized as a memorial to the approximately 1,500 people who died.
The luxury ocean liner that traveled from England to New York in 1912 crashed into an iceberg and sank. Its remains were discovered in 1985 about 3.8 kilometers (2.4 mi) deep in the North Atlantic Ocean.
RMS Titanic Inc. is the court-approved custodian of shipping artifacts. The company’s collection includes silver dinnerware, porcelain pieces and gold coins, as well as whistles and a piece of the Titanic’s hull.
