An Israeli company is working on a pilot project to establish a kind of “technological perimeter” on the border between the Dominican Republic and Haiti, as revealed by Dominican Foreign Minister Roberto Alvarez.
The project is being tested in the northern Dominican border, in the province of Montecristi, and with it is expected to meet the border line between the two countries.
The Dominican Republic and Haiti agreed on 10 January to take appropriate measures to implement state-of-the-art technologies to facilitate the elimination of illegal migration, trafficking and trafficking in human beings, the flow of weapons, drug trafficking and animal theft. . other illicit activities.
The Dominican foreign minister said the physical fence that the Dominican army had begun building in El Carrizal, on the Elías Piña border, was expanding.
“I think that at certain points (a fence) is necessary at other points where the technological and electronic ‘fence’ will be the solution and in this sense there is an Israeli company now doing in the north, in Montecristi,” said the Dominican foreign minister in an interview with Listin.
This “technological perimeter” that the Chancellor is talking about could be set up in different ways. “It’s an electronic perimeter in which there could be a combination of gates, at some point, drones, various elements,” he said during the interview.
The Dominican Foreign Minister insisted that, at the end of the day, everything depends on the human quality that technology controls.
“Because if you don’t have someone who, when there’s a breakup … then you need the right human response,” he said.
Roberto Alvarez said another thing they have worked with Haiti is identifying border terminals, as some have disappeared due to the rise of Lake Azuey.
That is why it is working on the georeferencing of these points and on the identification of those that are still visible. “There is no problem or dispute with the land border,” the Dominican foreign minister told Listin Diario.
The diplomat explained that due to the floods of the lake, a settlement of Haitians has been moved to the Dominican territory and the Haitian authorities are already working to bring them back to their territory. “We’re talking about 100 people,” Alvarez said.
Dominican diplomacy has the agenda to start negotiations for the delimitation of maritime borders with Haiti. “This process will begin as soon as possible,” said the statement signed by the presidents of Haiti, Jovenel Moise and Luis Abinader of the Dominican Republic.
The country has already started and completed the same negotiation process with the Netherlands.
“We have taken up the subject and we have already concluded negotiations with one of the four that were missing, with the Netherlands, because we have a maritime border with Curaçao, Aruba and Bonaire and it was easy, because practically two points had to be closed between Venezuela. and Columbia, to establish the coordinates, we held these meetings and in a week we will sign the final agreement, “he said.
From now on, the Dominican Republic intends to exhaust the same path of negotiations with Haiti, the United States and the United Kingdom (Turks and Caicos).
“The importance of the territorial sea for us lies in the fact that we have a territory three times more submerged than on land. There may be no oil, but there may be gas and who knows if other minerals, “said the minister.
Roberto Álvarez attended the Listín Breakfast, the newspaper’s briefing, where he shared the country’s positions on Venezuela, which he said needed to sit down and discuss until an agreement was reached between the opposition and the Nicolás Maduro regime.
Álvarez also referred to his efforts with ambassadors from different nations to manage ongoing aid to neighboring Haiti. One of the projects he is developing is the construction of hospitals, where they will be assisted by Brazil, which already has experience in the management of hospitals in that country.
