The controversial Rising Sun design has been removed from the relaunch of Street Fighter II

Capcom Arcade Stadium came to Switch yesterday and people are already finding new secrets and updates in the various arcade games inside.

In the latest discovery, the Twitter user @pomegd (h / t Kotaku) noticed that part of bathing stage E. Honda had been removed for the relaunch of Street Fighter II: Sunrise, which had previously been painted on the tile wall.

The flag of the rising sun has existed for centuries, but eventually became known as the flag of the Japanese imperial army and navy and therefore as a symbol of imperialism. As a result, it is a controversial image in many parts of East Asia, in countries such as South Korea, which was under Japanese rule until the end of World War II.

As Kotaku’s Brian Ashcraft remarks, it’s not the first time the Rising Sun has changed into Street Fighter. In the Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, the Rising Sun flag was replaced with a simple sun design, rather than removed altogether.

The Rising Sun was probably removed in an effort not to offend any part of the Street Fighter community.

Do you prefer the simplicity of the bare wall or the balance of SFV’s solar design? Tell us in the comments.
