The Colorado vaccine site closes early after side effects of the Johnson & Johnson shot

A COVID-19 vaccination site in Colorado closed early Wednesday after patients had side effects from Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot vaccine.

The Health Belt, which helps manage the community vaccination center in Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, said in a statement posted on Twitter that 11 patients who received the vaccine had side effects.

Only two of the patients were taken to hospitals for further observation “out of an abundance of caution.”

The Health Belt said the number of people who reported adverse events was 0.62 percent of the more than 1,700 people who were vaccinated on Wednesday on the spot. The 640 patients who could not be vaccinated were rescheduled to be vaccinated on April 11.

In a separate statement, state officials said there was no reason to worry about others being vaccinated on the spot on Wednesday.

“The state has no reason to believe that people who were vaccinated today at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park should be concerned,” the statement said. “Adverse reactions are usually immediate. Healthcare providers monitor patients for reactions after vaccines for at least 15 minutes after the injection (or for 30 minutes if the patient has a history of anaphylaxis) for this reason. This event has no impact on other vaccine providers. ”

Nearly 80,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson vaccine have been administered in Colorado since early March, officials said. Overall, over 1.9 million people in the state had at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 1,145,039 were fully vaccinated.

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says nausea, fever, illness and fatigue are among the possible side effects that can occur after the vaccine is given. They usually start within a day or two of the vaccine and should go away in a few days.

Clinical studies have shown that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is 66 percent effective to prevent COVID-19 in general and 85 percent effective in preventing severe cases.
