On his inauguration day, President Biden managed to put out one last campaign advertisement.
Instead of the usual cover with the inaugural ball – you know, a beautiful ballad from BeyoncIt is while the president and first lady dance slowly – I received a sober, celebrity concert called “Celebrating America”, broadcast on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN and MSNBC in primetime.
Hoping Rachel Maddow would sing “You’re A Grand Old Flag” while twisting sticks in flames, I was disappointed by the less interesting, but equally transparent, 90-minute program. The evening was little more than a public relations opportunity for the new administration.
A press release said the program would “present a resistance of the American people, heroism and a unified commitment to come together as a nation to heal and rebuild.”
Calm down, boys. This introduced Jon Bon Jovi to a Florida dock.
OK, he occasionally did what his title claimed he would do. The songs were introduced by front workers, teachers and volunteer children. No one would deny their heroism or dignity. But these segments, of course, were told by Biden and looked like a kind of 30-second spot that you would see on an Ohio TV on November 6th.
Just hours after the most important speech of his life, Biden gave another speech. And this time, instead of being introduced by Amy Klobuchar, he switched to Tom Hanks.
“[We] we wanted to make sure our inauguration was not about us, but about you, ”the president said as he stood in the humble and altruistic Lincoln Memorial.
“Because of you, democracy prevailed,” he added. “So if the other one got more votes, would democracy be upset?” Does not matter. Bring the songs.
In recent days, politicians and experts have told us that the darkest days of the pandemic are still raging. You wouldn’t know this from the chipper music choices: Jon Bon Jovi covered “Here Comes The Sun”, Justin Timberlake and Ant Clemons did duets in “Better Days”, John Legend sang the classic Nina Simone “I’m Feeling Good ”And Foo Fighters cried“ Times Like These ”(“ I’m a growing new day! ”, The lyrics go).
Demi Lovato later crashed into “Lovely Day,” while Biden and First Lady Jill Biden mingled awkwardly around the White House, and Katy Perry belted “Firework” as the DC sky filled with light at last. See? Starting today, things are going great!
Tomorrow, networks should stop giving their type of free time to broadcast to empty their senses and demand real action. Hold him accountable, right? Or has it only been for the last four years?
