The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the agency has documented approximately 5,800 cases of COVID-19 “discovery” among millions of Americans who are fully vaccinated, totaling well under 1% of those fully vaccinated.
“Infections detected by vaccines account for a small percentage of people who are fully vaccinated,” the CDC told The Hill in a statement. “The CDC recommends that all eligible individuals receive a COVID-19 vaccine as soon as one is available.”
The CDC told The Hill on Thursday that about 7 percent of the findings were recorded in hospital and that about 1 percent of those who contracted discovered infections died.

To date, no unexpected patterns have been identified in demographics or vaccine characteristics, the CDC said.
The health agency urged all eligible individuals to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible and fully vaccinated individuals to maintain precautions against coronavirus, such as wearing a mask and social distancing, to avoid contracting the disease.
The CDC said COVID-19 was reported among “all people of all ages eligible for vaccination.”
Most major infections occurred among women and just over 40% occurred among those aged 60 years or older. Nearly 30 percent of cases found among fully vaccinated individuals were asymptomatic, the CDC reported.
“The CDC monitors cases reported for grouping based on patient demographics, geographic location, time of vaccination, vaccine type or batch number, and the SARS-CoV-2 line,” the agency said.
The federal agency has also developed a database for state health officials to enter and organize data on these discovery cases. “When available,” the CDC said, “samples will be collected for genomic sequencing to find out if certain variants have caused the infection.”
