Parliamentary colleague Claude DeBellefeuille of the Bloc of Quebecois party pointed to Amos’ indiscretion during questioning.
“I saw an improperly dressed member during question time. I mean, dressed. So you can remind members, especially male members, that suits and ties are appropriate,” DeBellefeuille said in French, according to the parliamentary translator.
“I saw that the member was in very good shape, but I think this member should be reminded of what is appropriate and check his room.
The Speaker of the House, Anthony Rota, replied to DeBellefeuille: “I would like to thank the Honorable Member for his comments,” Rota said. “I missed that.”
Amos then posted an apology on his Twitter account.
“I sincerely apologize to all my colleagues in the House. It was a sincere mistake + it will not happen again.”
Amos is a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, led by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
CNN contacted Amos and the prime minister’s office for comment.
In June 2020, the Canadian parliament saw another controversy after the leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada, Jagmeet Singh, was forced to leave the building after calling another politician a “racist”.
Singh made the accusation in the House of Commons after Alain Therrien, of the Bloc Québécois party, refused to support a motion calling on parliament to acknowledge the existence of systemic racism in the Canadian Royal Police force.
The Québécois bloc posted on Twitter to address the exchange and urged Singh to apologize for his remarks, which they said had “tarnished” Therrien’s reputation.
