The burglar was caught by the bite of German sausages

BERLIN (AP) – German police say they have solved a nine-year-old burglary after DNA found on a piece of half-eaten sausage matched that of a man detained in France for an unrelated murder.

Police in the western town of Schwelm said on Thursday that the sausages belonged to the victim, and the suspect – a 30-year-old Albanian citizen – appeared to have been bitten during the March 2012 burglary.

It was unclear what type of sausage – known in Germany as wurst – the burglar had creaked, although police said it was a tough variety.

Investigators were recently warned that French police had taken a DNA sample from a man involved in a violent crime.

But Schwelm police said the suspect remains free and, in the worst case, he can escape punishment. The statute of limitations for burglary has expired, which means that he will probably not be extradited to Germany.
