The Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals and New York Mets have agreed to a three-way deal that will send outfielder Andrew Benintendi from Fenway to KC, sources told Jeff Passan, ESPN, on Wednesday night.
Khalil Lee, the prospect of the Royals team, will go to the Mets, while Franchy Cordero, outfield, Royals, will go to the Red Sox, along with other players involved, sources told ESPN.
Benintendi, once part of the Red Sox’s core bandwagon, missed most of the pandemic’s shortened 2020 season, landing on the list of those injured on Aug. 12 due to a tense right rib cage, and Boston later ruled him out for that year. .
He had just an average of .103 homeless and an RBI in 52 appearances in 14 games.
Benintendi won a .273 career and finished second in the U.S. league rookie vote in 2017. He led all 15-round Red Sox players in their 2018 postseason race that ended with a World Championship. Series.
He has one more year on a two-year, $ 10 million deal reached in February 2020 before becoming eligible for arbitration in 2022 and free agent in 2023.
