The 49ers had a very successful free agency period because of how well they managed to keep their top free agents. While there will certainly be more additions and decreases throughout the season, there are a number of players still available in the free agent market that could help San Francisco improve its pre-draft roster.

Corner depth is still a necessity, although they will probably address this in the project. The defensive end is another obvious weakness of the list, and this year’s draft class is not deep enough for the 49ers to easily find an impact player on Day 2 or 3.

Fortunately for San Francisco, there are some defensive heads available that could help the club in 2021. These are the titles of our list of free agents that the 49-year-old should pull with tires this season:

Unsurprisingly, Ingram is still available. He faced some injury issues that limited him to just 20 games in the last two years, but he was incredibly productive when he played. He has 49 career sacks in 113 games and has had no fewer than 7.0 since 2014. Ingram did not pull out a sack in seven games in 2020. A spinning top role through Dee Ford’s fault could fit Ingram, though if he’s looking for another big payday outside of next season, and the 49ers could offer that opportunity.

Four times Pro Bowler has peaked and is a year older than Ingram, but has posted 11 more sacks in 28 games in the last two years. Kerrigan has already moved on to a rotating role on a good defensive line and would fit nicely as a productive veteran presence in a group that needs some depth.

Griffen turns 34 in December, and his days as a productive player for all players are far behind him. Given what the 49ers are working on in the draft defensive spot, however, a veteran who put 6.0 sacks in 14 two-team games last year would not be a bad addition to a one-year flight.

Okafor has just turned 30 and has never been a super-productive liability. His biggest career in sacks is 8.0 and that came during his second season in the NFL in 2014. However, he would fit nicely into a Ronald Blair-type role, where can fulfill a number of responsibilities on the defensive line, beyond working as a bird. The 49ers plan to re-sign Blair on the NBC Sports Bay Area, but Okafor would be a nice alternative if he reached an agreement with Blair.

Cornerback became a less pressing need with the returns of Jason Verrett, Emmanuel Moseley and K’Waun Williams. This group, however, was not the image of health and consistency, which makes a productive veteran like Hayward a useful addition. It may not start, but if you have it in reserve if Verrett or Moseley is not available it would be a good insurance that 49ers do not have.

San Francisco should bring Garland back so he can fulfill the role he was supposed to play – a versatile, offensive line officer who can start with a pinch. The 49-year-old came to need it to be a full-time starting center, which is suboptimal. Having his versatility as a backup would help immensely the depth of the San Francisco offensive line.
