Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and The Network, two global consulting firms, conducted a survey in 190 countries that tried to determine where people prefer to go to live for personal or professional reasons.
The study is called “Decoding global, on-site and virtual talent” (in Spanish “Decoding global talent in situ or virtual) and identified a unique change that changed the landscape.

Before, the “American dream” was still valid, and most people wanted to know the United States, or at least chose it as their main work destination.
Now a new variable has come into play: the pandemic. A situation that changed preferences when traveling, provoking People are turning to the countries that have managed the health crisis best or have the lowest number of COVID-19 cases.

Here is a list of the 10 countries people prefer to go to:
1. Canada
Since 2014, Canada appears in the “top 10”, but has remained on the third place. In 2020 it reached the first place.
The country it is the preferred destination for people who want to work abroad, including those who have a master’s or doctorate who have
digital training or experience and, above all, those under 30 years of age.
2. United States
Before, the United States was the favorite place for travelers. However, in 2020, given the global health situation, it came in second and was replaced by Canada.
Among the reasons for this decline, identified by Boston Consulting Group and The Network, are “inconsistent response to the pandemic, the adoption of more nationalist policies and social unrest”.
It is worth remembering that in mid-2020 and with restrictions due to covid-19, there were massive protests against police violence after the death of George Floyd by suffocation, in addition, the turbulent climate before the presidential election made the social landscape more tense economic and labor.
3. Australia
Australia continues to grow.
In 2014, this country ranked seventh. In 2018 it increased to fourth and in the most recent study it ranked third.
Besides being a country with a great tourist attraction for its beaches, is highly desired by those who want to study at the most prestigious universities.

4. Germany
This European country has moved from second to fourth place.
However, it is not so likely to be the fault of the country itself, but rather of the whole continent having so many cases of covid-19.
This would also explain why France, Spain and Italy fell.
Germany It continues to have a large number of contagions and, for this reason, has decreed a quarantine which is in force until 28 March.
Meanwhile, a comprehensive vaccination strategy is underway, but the pace has not been as agile as expected, causing concern and criticism in many quarters.
5. United Kingdom
The English country remains stable in the same position as four years ago. However, it is worth mentioning this in 2014 it reached the second place.
In recent years, the United Kingdom has been involved in the overthrow of the media for various (not necessarily positive) reasons: its departure from the European Union, the number of cases of covid-19, the presence of a new strain of virus and, recently, the Palace scandal. Buckingham resulted in the withdrawal of Harry and Meghan’s royalty.
6. Japan
This is one of the first two Asian countries. In fact, he climbed four places, going from tenth to sixth.
Japan’s presence here indicates this language is no longer a barrier, since before English-speaking countries dominated in the first place.
It is worth mentioning that South Korea, although not in the top ten, grew rapidly to 12th place, after being 24 (2018).

7. Switzerland
Switzerland climbed only one place. In 2018 it decreased from position 5 to 8.

The other Asian country on the list is Singapore.
It is the first time he enters the top and he did it constantly: he climbed ten places and is on the 8th place.
Singapore also stood out last year for effective health control in the face of the challenges posed by covid-19. Since the pandemic began, it has recorded about 60,000 cases and only 29 people have died as a result.
9. France
France, on the other hand, has decreased progressively since 2014, moving from position 6 to 7.
In this list it ranked ninth.
In terms of the pandemic, France was one of the first nations in Europe to reach one million immunized from covid-19 in January this year.

10. New Zealand
It is the first time that New Zealand appears in the top 10.
The island has received worldwide attention for its prime minister Jacinda Ardern’s handling of the current pandemic crisis.
This nation behaved contrary to the other territories that entered the list. Sandro Marzo, CEO and partner of BCG, said that “the pandemic has made both countries and cities traditionally attractive for them to work for, to enter the rankings.”
In fact, Spain, Italy and Sweden came off the podium. It is worth noting that in 2020, the first two were sources of the pandemic in Europe.
