A beauty queen from Sri Lanka who caused a contest over the crown has been arrested following an altercation on the scene, police said on Thursday.
Her “Lady World” Caroline Jurie has been arrested on charges of “mere wounding and criminal prosecution” in connection with Sunday night’s chaos at a Colombo competition, the BBC reported.
Jurie, who is from Sri Lanka, started the ruckus when she jumped on stage while crowning the new “Mrs. Pushpika De Silva, the winner from Sri Lanka “, the press informed.
She snatched the crown from De Silva’s head, claiming that she was in fact divorced and thus disqualified to hold the title.
“There is a rule that prevents women who have already been married and divorced, so they are taking steps to make the crown second,” Jurie told the crowd.
Jury put the crown in second place, causing tears and noise on stage.
De Silva had to be hospitalized to be treated for head injuries after the disaster, the BBC reported.
She later told reporters that she would take legal action for the “unreasonable and offensive” way she was treated, the BBC reported.
Police confirmed on Thursday that they had arrested Jurie and another competitor in connection with the battle.
“Police have arrested Caroline Jurie and model Chula Padmendra in connection with Sunday’s incident on charges of simple injury and a criminal case,” police spokeswoman Ajith Rohana told the BBC.
The organizers of the contest recognized De Silva and apologized for the incident.
“We are disappointed. It was a shame the way Caroline Jurie behaved on stage, and Mrs. World’s organization has already started an investigation on this topic “, said the organizers of the event.
