So far, the NFL has been a tough off-season defender that has featured rumored trades or real deals with well-known quarterbacks, including Deshaun Watson and Matthew Stafford.
The latest defender in the spotlight is Carson Wentz of Philadelphia, who is expected to be traded soon after a fall. And, as you would expect, the Chicago Bears were involved in all of these discussions. This is when your general manager and coach have one more year to solve a quarterback problem with this decades-old franchise.
There are rumors flying around about Bears and Wentz that it’s hard to know what to believe. But this is true, according to reliable sources in the entire league – the Bears are very interested in trading for Wentz.
Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network pointed out just as much, though he quickly pointed out that any transaction doesn’t seem imminent. Garafolo said the Eagles and the two leading candidates for Wentz in the Bears and the Indianapolis Colts are all “playing poker.” In essence, Philadelphia is waiting for an offer they like while Chicago and Indianapolis explore their options.
Bears recently promoted quarterback coach John DeFilippo to pass the game’s coordinator, which feels almost like a prelude to Wentz’s potential landing in Chicago. DeFilippo coached Wentz for the first two seasons of the league, which included his MVP race in 2017.
It’s no coincidence that the Bears and Colts are the two teams that show the most interest, given that each has a coach who worked with Wentz during his impressive season at DeFilippo and Colts head coach Frank Reich.
While the Bears, like the rest of the league, hold out hope that the Houston Texans will give up and change Watson, this is a dream come true right now. So with limited options and the 20th general choice, Wentz might be the best option right now – at the right price, of course.
