Ash covered the streets of the Caribbean island of St. Vincent Saturday after La Soufrière burst out.
The volcano erupted on Friday, but ash clouds continued to surround the island, covering streets and houses, Reuters reported.
Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves ordered an evacuation of cities near the volcano and 20,000 people left the area by Friday.
A witness told Reuters that he heard on Saturday morning from the volcano and ash coming out of it.
Larger explosions are possible after the one that took place on Friday, according to the wire service, and they can continue for weeks or months.
COVID-19 carried out complicated evacuations due to the eruptions, as the surrounding islands that agreed to host the evacuations, including Saint Lucia, Grenada and Barbados, still have restrictions in place, The New York Times reported.
A Royal Caribbean cruise ship heading to the island to help evacuate people needs to vaccinate passengers before boarding, and the surrounding islands that want to take refugees need vaccinations against coronavirus, Gonsalves said.
Even the shelters on the island limit those who can enter and recommend a vaccine, the prime minister added.
The National Emergency Management Organization Vincent issued a statement on Saturday telling residents to be ready to “evacuate soon,” as “steaming / smoking” increased.
The last eruption took place in April 1979 and no one was killed.
