Our favorite streaming device has just received a major update.

As initially teased by Google in December, the Google TV Chromecast now supports the Apple TV app on its platform. Other Google TV-powered devices will also receive application support, including Sony and TCL TVs for 2020, when they hit the market later this year. Google also said that the application will arrive on additional Android-TV devices in the coming months, but did not explain which specific devices will be included.

Add the Apple TV app to your Chromecast the devices are huge – it means that long-term Apple users will now be able to access all the content they have purchased through the platform on their Chromecast with Google TV. In addition, for people with Apple TV + subscriptions, they will also be able to stream original Apple originals to your Google device.

Apple TV was one of the last major streaming apps missing from the Chromecast with Google TV, and the addition makes it a strong competitor as a cheaper alternative to Apple’s set-top boxes. The interfaces are significantly different, with Google TV placing a much greater emphasis on recommendation and discovery. But depending on specifications, and especially for the casual streamer that doesn’t require a large amount of storage on the device, Google TV checks most of the same boxes for premium features – and costs a quarter of what the Apple TV 4K box does.

Apple originals will now appear in Google TV search results and content recommendations, and will be added to your watchlist. In addition, the Google Assistant will now be able to play Apple titles. These features are available in the US now, but will be launched for global users in the coming months, the company said.

The best budget streaming device continues to improve.
