An American man who allegedly smoked or ingested a pot in Las Vegas faces three years in prison in the United Arab Emirates after traces of marijuana were found days later in his urine, according to Detained in Dubai, a website published by his lawyer.
Peter Clark, 51, flew from Las Vegas to Dubai on February 24, where he went to the hospital after suffering a pancreatitis attack. Doctors there found hashish urine in the urine – considered possession in the UAE – and reported Clark to authorities.
He was arrested on March 3 and spent three days in a “flea cell” before being left back at his hotel, where he awaits his fate.
He recorded a video of the ordeal after he was released from prison.
“I’ve lost a ton of weight, no shower, no food, nothing to drink since I got here, no sleep,” Clark said.
“Arbitrary enforcement of the law by the UAE and the lack of predictable legal results mean that Peter faces years in prison for legal marijuana smoking. Even if he is found not guilty, he can be sued in a slow and costly legal process, “said Clark’s lawyer, Radha Stirling.
Clark claims that he did not bring drugs to Dubai and did not use or buy drugs while he was there.
He is not the first Westerner to have suffered similar charges
