Apple’s iOS update production has grown substantially in recent years, with four major updates coming to iOS 11, five to iOS 12 and seven to iOS 13. We now have four updates to iOS 14, but the fifth will be soon and is forming. is set to be the biggest iPhone it has seen since last fall. There will be a lot of reasons to download iOS 14.5 on arrival, one of which is a solution to a problem that you may not realize has your iPhone.
When iOS 14.5 beta 6 was released in late March, 9to5Mac References to a new battery recalibration tool have been identified in the update. This help page was then found that describes a new feature that comes on iOS 14.5, which will solve a problem that some users encountered (unknowingly) with inaccurate estimates of battery status reports. The process can take several weeks, but some beta testers have begun to get their results.
First, here’s how the process will work for iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max users:
While the battery status reporting system is recalibrating, you’ll see a message in Settings> Battery> Battery status. Recalibration of maximum capacity and maximum performance capacity takes place during regular charging cycles, and this process could take several weeks. The maximum capacity percentage displayed will not change during recalibration. Peak performance capability may be upgraded, but it may not be visible to most users. If a previous degraded battery message was displayed, this message will be deleted after upgrading to iOS 14.5.
If you don’t check the Battery Health menu regularly, you may not notice anything, but if you have an iPhone 11 model and want to take note of any changes that may occur as a result of the iOS 14.5 update. As 8 Bit relays, some Reddit users have started sharing the results of their recalibrations, and the findings are interesting. One user says that the battery health has increased from 90% to 96%, another has gone from 87% to 90%, and the best result seems to be an increase from 88% to 95%. There were also a few modest drops.
It is worth noting that this is a problem with the health of the battery Report, not the health of the battery itself. If your iPhone 11 says that the battery health has dropped to 84%, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the battery dies faster than expected. Rather, there is simply an error in the reporting system, and once the software update has finished recalibrating the phone, you should see an accurate representation of the battery health.
Of course, not every battery ages gracefully, and Apple says that once the recalibration process is complete, you’ll see a new service message, “an Apple-authorized service provider can replace the battery for free to restore full performance and capacity.” If you have an iPhone 11, it can’t hurt to check your battery.
