Texas on Tuesday shattered its daily record for coronavirus cases.
The state reported 26,990 new COVID-19 cases, surpassing the previous daily record set less than a week ago, according to Bloomberg News.
The number of new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday was 41 percent higher than the previous record, which was set on December 23.
Separately, the state set a new record for COVID-19 hospitalizations, the tally reported at 11,775.
Texas, like many southern and western states, has struggled to contain a second wave of the virus that has swept the nation in recent months.
The state has seen its seven-day average positivity rate rise to more than 15 percent in the past week, the Texas Tribune reported.
“If the positivity test rate is higher than 10%, this is one of those red flags we’re starting to look at,” Governor Greg Abbott (R) reported in the Tribune in early May.
Abbott was due to receive a vaccine against coronavirus on Tuesday, in an attempt to increase public confidence in its safety and effectiveness.
As of Wednesday, more than 1.6 million cases of coronavirus have been reported in Texas and nearly 28,000 people have died in the state from contracting the disease.
