DALLAS – Texas reported another 197 deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday after a steady decline in the number of people hospitalized with coronavirus disease.
The Texas State Department of Health also reported 2,921 new confirmed cases of the virus on Sunday and another 715 probable cases. The state has reported more than 2.28 million confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic and 42,936 deaths.
It is believed that the actual number of cases is much higher, because many people have not been tested, and some who get sick have no symptoms.
There were 5,696 people hospitalized with COVID-19 in Texas on Saturday, the most recent day for which state data were available. This is a decrease of over 1,400 from a week earlier.
In the last week, more than 15% of COVID-19 tests in Texas have returned positive, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. University researchers say Texas has fully vaccinated more than 6 percent of its population.

For most people, coronavirus causes mild to moderate symptoms that go away in a few weeks. But for others, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause serious illness and can be fatal.
