Texani expects to hire Nick Caserio

Nick Caserio was interviewed today for the GM Panthers and Texans, but traveled to Houston for the Texans meeting. And the long-serving Patriots executive may be ready to make the big leap.

The Texans are expected to hire Caserio as their next general manager, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle (on Twitter). While nothing is completed, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports notes (on Twitter) the chances of Caserio returning to New England next season can be classified as “weak to none”. Houston’s Caserio interview produced “a real promise,” Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen of the ESPN.com report (via Twitter).

This move is about to happen, with Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero from NFL.com tweeting the Texans really went zero on Caserio, and Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, noticing that a deal is being finalized. His departure will leave Dave Ziegler as Bill Belichickfirst lieutenant, although the Broncos – who gave Ziegler the NFL start – requested a GM interview. Pats lost The Ossenfort Mountains to the Titans last year.

Of course, Caserio has an extensive history with the Texans. The team wanted to hire him in 2019, but his unusual Patriots contract banned such a move. However, he reappeared on Texan radar after Bill O’BrienShooting at the beginning of the season. Caserio has worked with the current Texan executive vice president Jack Easterby in New England and stays close to the former Patriots member. Easterby is believed to have a lot of influences in which direction Texans go with this rental.

45 years ago, Caserio was with the Patriots for 20 years. After Scott Pioli left for Kansas City in 2009, Caserio became a key role as Belichick’s right hand man. He was with the team for each of the six Super Bowl titles. The Patriots and Caserio reached another extension agreement in February 2020.

If Caserio gets this job, he will get into an interesting situation. O’Brien’s short position involved several brilliant and criticized trades, and one of them – Laremy Tunsil deal – leaves Texans without first- or second-round picks. Miami ranks 3rd in Houston’s general election. Revitalizing this list would be a big deal, but Texans hiring an executive they’ve been following for years would also be a big step.
