A new Pac-Man game, Pac-Man 99, is released today exclusively on Nintendo Switch and you can play it for free if you are a Nintendo Switch online subscriber.

Same with the similar name Tetris 99 and now he’s gone Mario 35, Pac-Man 99 offers a large-scale competitive rotation to the original Pac-Man arcade game. The main game Pac-Man is here: Move Pac-Man around a maze level, eating points and fruits while avoiding ghosts. Eating a power pellet puts Pac-Man on the offensive for a few seconds, allowing you to bite those ghostly pursuers and temporarily level them.

But Pac-Man 99 he has a new threat to fight: another 98 players.

Each person in a match plays their own Pac-Man level and, if caught by a ghost, loses the match. Players can damage their opponents’ game by eating ghosts to send a “Pac-Man Jammer” to another player’s board. Touching a Pac-Man Jammer slows down the Pac-Man movement, which makes it easier for ghosts to catch you.

Pac-Man 99 also introduces new starters that open up additional games styles such as gathering “ghost train” combos that increase a player’s personal score, throwing opponents with an extra Pac-Men Jammer, or increasing the speed of the game for additional challenge and higher rewards.

Every Pac-Man 99 the match lasts as long as one player remains – but you will win rewards even if you do not win the round. Points you earn while playing will unlock items in the game, such as avatar icons.

Pac-Man 99 has other game modes if you don’t want to play Battle-Royale matches, including CPU CPU and single-player. However, these additional modes are not included in the base and must be purchased separately. You can also purchase unique themes that change the game look. There are over 20 available at launch and each is based on other Namco arcade games such as Dig Dug, Galaga, Druaga’s Tower, and Xevious.

Some call Pac-Man 99 “Replacement” for Mario 35, since it’s only been a week after Nintendo shut down Mario 35 servers and both games share similar gameplay claims. However, it seems Pac-Man 99 it is here to stay, not an event of limited duration Mario 35 was. That being said, given that Pac-Man is now the third retro title to receive the Battle-Royale treatment on Switch, it makes you wonder if we’ll see more “99” series games. I one, I could go for one Donkey Kong 99 or Legend of Zelda 99.

Pac-Man 99 unlocks on April 7, at 18:00 Pacific / 21:00 East. It is available as a free download on Nintendo Switch eShop for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers and you can download it early so you can start playing as soon as it’s available.

The Nintendo Switch Online service costs $ 4 for a month, $ 8 for three months, or $ 20 a year. You can also sign up for one batch which accepts up to seven accounts for a single fee of $ 35 per year.
