A Tesla in autopilot mode crashed Wednesday morning in the patrol car of a Michigan state soldier, according to a local report.
The car, driven by a 22-year-old man, hit the police vehicle in the Lansing area at about 1:10 in the morning, while the soldier was responding to another car that hit a deer, WLNS-TV reported.
No one was injured in the crash. The Tesla driver was issued two summonses for driving with a suspended license and failure to travel.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has sent a team to Michigan to investigate.
This is the second time in less than a week that Tesla has collapsed in the state. In the first incident in Detroit, authorities said it appeared that the driver was not using the car’s autopilot mode, according to WDIV-TV.
Tesla has previously said that its autopilot and “full autopilot” are driver assistance systems and that the driver must be prepared to intervene at all times.
The company has been criticized by the National Transport Safety Council for failing to adequately monitor drivers to ensure they are being alerted.
