Tesla groups solar and Powerwall products only in the future

Elon Musk announced that Tesla will group its solar products, solar roofs and solar panels with the Powerwall home battery in the future.

You will not be able to buy one without the other starting next week.

Last month, Electrek reported exclusively that Tesla is stopping taking orders for Powerwall without solar panels or solar roofs.

Powerwall has become extremely popular.

Standby times have increased, despite Tesla’s efforts to increase production, and the company has even doubled the price of the battery in just a few months.

It made sense to limit the way you buy the product by connecting it to other Tesla products.

Now Tesla is taking a step further and doing the opposite.

CEO Elon Musk said people will only buy solar products with a Powerwall:

“Starting next week, Tesla solar panels and solar roofs will only be sold as an integrated Tesla Powerwall battery.”

While people could still order solar panels and solar roofs without a powerwall after last month’s change, now it looks like the change is going both ways.

Tesla is now looking to sell its home energy products only in the form of a power generation package (roof and solar panels) and energy storage (Powerwall).

Update: Now Musk has also added that now solar power will be powered directly into the Powerwall:

“Solar energy will be supplied exclusively to Powerwall. Powerwall will only interface between the utility meter and the main switch panel, allowing for super easy installation and an uninterrupted backup of the entire home while the utility is abandoned.

Take Electrek

This is not a huge change, given that Tesla has already made the move to sell Powerwalls only through its solar installations last month.

As for people who order solar without Powerwall, I’m sure it was a decent chunk of Tesla’s solar controls, given the cost of a Powerwall, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s about half or even a minority of projects.

Powerwall integration was actually one of the advantages of buying Tesla solar, but the company also worked with other solar installers to add Powerwall to their offerings.

I would prefer Elon to address the controversy over the price of the sunroof, especially back to contracts that have already been signed, but I don’t think that’s happening.
