Porsche delivered 9,072 Taycans in the first quarter, following the 911 model with 61 units, the brand owned by it Volkswagen AG said in a statement on Friday. The manufacturer has unveiled its first exclusively battery-powered model, which competes for customers with Model Tesla Inc. in 2019.

“Well-known models have supported this excellent result, along with the latest additions to our product range, above all the new model variants of the all-electric Taycan,” said Porsche sales manager Detlev von Platen about the 36% increase in the first quarter of the brand. “We can look back on a very positive start to the year.”
Taycan, which Porsche recently flanked with another spacious version, is a litmus test for the expensive transition of the car manufacturer to electric vehicles. Increasing EV sales with Porsche will be key to maintaining healthy margins, as the division is the VW Group’s largest profit contributor.

Porsche’s total deliveries rose to 71,986 vehicles in the first quarter, driven mainly by demand from China, its largest market. The Macan compact SUV was the brand’s best-selling model, ahead of the largest Cayenne. Porsche will launch a battery-powered version of the Macan next year, which is backed by a new platform for luxury electric cars, co-developed with its sister brand Audi.
Porsche remains optimistic about this year’s business outlook, even as a global shortage of semiconductor parts disrupts industry-wide production plans. Order books “continue to grow very well,” said Von Platen.
