Tampa Bay Rays trades John Curtiss to Miami Marlins, buys pitchers from Boston Red Sox in second bid

MIAMI – Right-back John Curtiss was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday for first minor league member Evan Edwards.

The Rays also assigned Ronaldo Hernandez, minor league receiver and league quarterback Nick Sogard, the Boston Red Sox to right fielder Chris Mazza, left fielder Jeffrey Springs and cash.

Boston has placed catcher Kevin Plawecki on the COVID-19 injured list.

Curtiss went 3-0 with 1.80 ERA in 17 games last year. He had a 6.30 ERA in 10 innings in the postseason for the American League champions.

Curtiss also played for Angels and Twins and has a career ERA of 3.83. He further strengthens the bullpen for the Marlins, who added earlier Ross Detwiler left and Dylan Floro, Anthony Bass and Adam Cimber to the right.

Mazza launched nine games as a starter and reliever for Boston last year and went 1-2 with an ERA 4.80. Springs went 0-2 with a 7.08 ERA in 16 bullpen games.

Edwards was selected in the fourth round of NC State in 2019. He hit .281 with nine homers in 73 minor minor games that year.
