New York. Cincinnati Reds outfielder Nick Castellanos has been suspended for two games and fined for his involvement in a field fight over the weekend.
This is the first sanction Michael Hill has issued in his new role as vice president of Major League Baseball baseball operations.
Castellanos appealed the sentence to Special Assistant John McHale Jr., so he will not serve the suspension while the appeal is processed.
According to MLB, Castellanos was sanctioned for his behavior in Saturday’s game against San Luis, citing “his aggressive reaction and instigating an incident that emptied the banks.”
Castellanos, who hit a round at home on the opening day of the season and jumped enthusiastically as he threw the bat, was hit by a pitch from Cardinals pitcher Jake Woodford on Saturday. Castellanos picked up the ball and offered to return it to Woodford before throwing it away.
After a wild pitch, Castellanos ran from third base to score a run, rising to explode Woodford, who was hit by catcher Yadier Molina on the plate.
When Castellanos left, Molina came to claim him, which led to the emptying of banks and bullpens. Castellanos was sent off.
Molina was fined on Monday, as was third base at St. Louis, Nolan Arenado, and pitcher Jordan Hicks. Two other Cincinnati players were fined: defender Eugenio Suárez and pitcher Jesse Winker.
Hill, a former baseball president for the Miami Marlins, has taken over from Chris Young after just one season as Joe Torre’s successor in the MLB disciplinary role. Young took over as general manager for the Texas Rangers.
