Suspected drunk driver ‘sniffs a family out of life’ after mother, children die in fiery crash, official says

SMALL, Texas – Harris County Constable Mark Herman said Monday that a suspected drunk driver is responsible for an accident in which a mother and two of her children died in a multi-vehicle accident in the Klein area on Sunday.

Herman said the driver will be held accountable after essentially “taking a family out of life”.

Another child, a 2-year-old in the same family, has been living in a hospital in Houston since Monday, Herman said.

The seven-vehicle crash occurred on FM 2920 and Gosling Road on Sunday evening. Officials said several people had been injured and several vehicles were on fire.

Another person from another vehicle was transported over the ground with non-life-threatening injuries, researchers said.

All other occupants involved had no or minor injuries and were treated on the spot.

Herman said the driver’s suspected drunk car hit the mother’s car at high speed. The driver, who has not yet been identified, is expected to survive and has bumps and bruises from the crash. Herman said he is expected to be charged with multiple counts of intoxication, homicide with the possibility of higher charges, depending on the current situation with the 2-year-old in hospital.

The names of the deceased relatives have not been released pending notification from the family.

Herman said the suspect’s blood alcohol level is the “main contributing factor” in this case. He said it was 1.5%. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, you are legally intoxicated in Texas when your blood alcohol concentration reaches 0.08%.

“I really don’t want to put my personal thoughts into it, because it wouldn’t be too nice,” said Herman. “But professionally, I can tell you that law enforcement continues to fight our disabled drivers well (with DWI initiatives from local sheriff and local agents).”
