Twitter said Tuesday it would not automatically transfer the millions of followers of the Donald Trump administration’s official accounts to incoming Joe Biden administration., but would give the users of that social network the option to follow or not to follow them.

The move will affect supporters of government-run accounts like @WhiteHouse and @POTUS, who will switch to Biden when he takes office in January.

Twitter’s decision does not affect @realDonaldTrump’s personal account, which has been used consistently by President Trump and has an estimated 88 million followers.

Official Government Accounts “do not automatically keep your current followers. Instead, Twitter will notify the followers of these accounts to put them in context that the content will be archived and allow them to follow the new accounts of the Biden administration, “said a statement from the social. network.

Biden will assume command of the White House in January.

“For example, People who follow @WhiteHouse will be notified that the account has been filed as @ WhiteHouse45 and will be given the option to follow the new @ WhiteHouse account”.

Twitter has been working to transition to this platform widely used by Trump since the official election results were finalized.

While it hasn’t been tracked as much as Trump’s personal account, @POTUS has approximately 33 million followers, while @WhiteHouse has 26 millions.

Last month, Twitter indicated that any special treatment Trump has enjoyed will end his presidency.

The transfer will affect other institutional accounts such as @VP, @FLOTUS, @PressSec, @Cabinet and @LaCasaBlanca, according to Twitter.
