Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Hungrybox fainted live during the Melee pop-off celebration

The pop-off is real in Super Smash Bros.

Super Smash Bros. Champion Melee Juan “Hungrybox” DeBiedma is known for his excessive celebration after a particularly intense match. Seriously, is there a more memorable Smash moment than EVO 2016, when Hungrybox was in tears on earth after defeating Adam “Armada” Lindgren?

Well, Hungrybox could have outdone himself this time. Last night, Hungrybox came out so loud that he fainted for about 10 seconds. It was such a shocking and disturbing moment captured on the webcam that it can become one of the most discussed pop-offs of all time.

Hungrybox shared the moment on Twitter, telling his followers that he was going to the doctor to see if he was okay. Even though the internet has already had a dog day mocking such a memorable moment, fainting is not a laughing matter.

Hungrybox explains the pop-off fainting incident

Hungrybox released a video discussing the incident the following evening. He recounted the intense six-hour stream in which he climbed to the grand final of Eastcoast Fridays, a weekly Melee online tournament with a few big names.

“I’m sweaty, I’m tired. But I’m also hyper-focused. I decided I wanted this reward more than anything else in my life at the time,” Hungrybox recalled. “I started playing some of the best online melee I’ve ever had.”

Hungrybox admitted that he often screams quite loudly when he wins. “That’s me,” he said, noticing that he had his heart on his sleeve. But screaming always makes it a little easy.

However, this time it was a little different. His vision and head “lit up.” He said it was a cloud in his head and he was really dizzy, similar to an intense motion sickness. He was stronger than any other time he came out, fainting him for the first time.

“It was a bizarre experience,” Hungrybox said.

Hungrybox also added that it is completely fine. Most likely it was a lack of food and hydration, rather than a serious health condition. Maybe it’s not the best decision to pop so excited after streaming for more than eight hours. However, it is a relief for his fans.

This is not the first time Hungrybox has had a health problem.

Prior to EVO 2018, Hungrybox announced a serious wrist injury on Twitter. After entering the second place at a bar, Hungrybox suffered a sharp pain in the wrist that lowered his arm.

“First the broken finger, then the food poisoning, then the flu, now whatever that is,” Hungrybox wrote on Twitter.

Some of the responses to the Hungrybox wrist injury are part of why the Smash community has been seen as toxic for so many years. Many people have celebrated the health problems of God Melee, apparently pleased that he will not be able to fully compete with his potential.

Bullying became too much for Hungrybox at the time. He wrote on Twitter that he has been receiving community shit for 12 years. This included being mocked every day by his “colleagues, competitors” and even “top community figures.”

“Like what’s the point,” Hungrybox wondered at the time.

While the Smash community has cleaned up its act recently, it hasn’t stopped people from making fun of Hungrybox for its latest health episode. A lot of people joked that Hungrybox “came up with a rest”, referring to one of his clutch movements with Jigglypuff. Video remixes are also starting to appear on Twitter.

Joseph “Mang0” Marquez even replied, “What the hell is wrong with you?”

Even though Hungrybox has welcomed the entertainment for now, his fans hope that everything is fine in terms of health with the biggest competitor Melee. The Smash community is currently waiting for an update from the Hungrybox doctor’s visit.
