In 2022, Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away will receive its first live-action theatrical adaptation.

This is the first Studio Ghibli film to get a stage adaptation. In 2013, Studio Ghibli and Whole Hog Theater collaborated on a live-action Princess Mononoke, which ran at the New Diorama Theater in London.

This time, Tony and Olivier Award-winning director John Caird (The Miserables, Nicholas Nickleby, Daddy Long Legs) will pass and lead the adaptation.

Known as Without the Chihiro in Japan, Spirited Away was released in 2001 and became a massive hit in Japan.

“I feel so excited and privileged to work on the first one stage adaptation of Without the Chihiro“Caird said in an official statement. “For many years, I have considered Miyazaki Hayao to be one of the preeminent geniuses of world cinema and the greatest supporter of the anime form.”

“I probably spent a thousand hours working on it Without the Chihiro and I look forward to spending many more, ”he said.

Both Mone Kamishiraishi and Kanna Hashimoto were double in the lead role of Chihiro. Mone is probably best known for her work in anime Your name while Hashimoto starred in a number of movies and television shows.

“Hayao and I both liked John’s vision. He is a person we can trust, “said Toshio Suzuki of Studio Ghibli, who produced the original film. “I look forward to seeing Chihiro grow up on stage under his guidance.”

The stage version of Spirited Away will debut at the Imperial Theater in Tokyo, Japan, in February 2022 and run until March. The production will be take the road to Osaka (April), Fukuoka (May), Sapporo (June) and Nagoya (June and July).
