Stalls out the front, bringing wet weather to Central Florida

Sunday marked the start of a multi-day rainy event as the setup becomes favorable for numerous downpours and embedded storms for Central Florida.

A weak stationary front will continue to meander and act as the main triggering mechanism for showers and storms through Tuesday. Long range models show peak rain coverage during the first half of the work week.

Opportunities for rain from Sunday are more likely to favor northern counties, with an increased risk of showers and storms further south along the Interstate 4 corridor into the afternoon.

In addition to scattered showers, we also expect a marginal risk of some strong to severe storms by midday.

The main dangers of these storms are frequent lightning, penny-sized hail, and gusts of wind up to 45-50 mph. Under some heavier rain tires, we could see rain speeds in excess of 2 inches per hour. These dangers are likely to continue through Monday and Tuesday.

Areas northward will warm up to the mid-1980s, with warmer daytime highs for areas further south. With lows in the mid 60’s throughout the area tonight.

As this jammed front remains in the area, a few weak upper disturbances will traverse the region, improving lift, especially during the day and evening hours on Mondays and Tuesdays. Rain cover is likely to be greatest from Osceola / Brevard counties northward with unusually high rainfall rates of 80-90% both days.

Widespread heavy rains are increasingly likely, with rainfall amounts up to 3-4 inches, with local totals close to 6 inches. While a marginal flood threat will exist, drier soils should limit the threat.
