Sri Lanka arrests “Lady World” after riots on stage, attack | News from Sri Lanka

Jurie was detained for withdrawing the de Silva crown minutes after she was declared Mrs. Sri Lanka 2020 and damaged the venue.

Colombo police arrested the current Ms. World on charges of attacking a scene on the scene in which she pulled the crown from the head of the new lady Sri Lanka.

Caroline Jurie snatched the crown from Pushpika de Silva a few minutes after she was declared Lady Sri Lanka 2020 at a gala at the Nelum Pokuna Theater in Colombo on Sunday.

Jurie was Mrs. Sri Lanka from the previous year and won the Mrs World competition.

De Silva needed treatment at the hospital after the incident, seen by amazed spectators in a packed theater, as well as a live social audience.

“I arrested Jurie and [her associate] Chula Manamendra in connection with a charge of assault and causing damage to Nelum Pokuna [theatre]”, Said police officer Ajith Rohana.

De Silva told reporters in front of the Cinnamon Gardens police station in Colombo on Thursday that she was ready to drop the charges if Jurie apologized publicly, but she refused.

“I tried to put an end to this out of court, but she refused,” de Silva said. “I can forgive, but I can’t forget.”

There were no immediate comments from the Jury or her lawyer.

Police sources told the AFP news agency that a trial is likely to take place next week, and Jurie and her partner, who collapsed on stage on Sunday, could receive bail later on Thursday.

incident

Jurie had come on the scene claiming that de Silva was divorced and therefore not eligible for the award.

To qualify for the title, competitors must be married. De Silva is estranged from her husband, but they are still legally married.

Organizers said they were seeking compensation from the jury for damage to the backstage stage and locker rooms where several mirrors were broken.

The jury was also accused by the organizers of discrediting the event.

The owner of the local franchise for the contest, Chandimal Jayasinghe, said that they are “deeply disturbed and sincerely regret” Jurie’s behavior.
