LOS ANGELES (AP) – Spike Lee’s daughter and son have been chosen as Golden Globe Ambassadors to attend the awards ceremony.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Tuesday morning that Satchel and Jackson Lee will take over as ambassadors for the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards in February.
Satchel, 26, and Jackson, 23, are the first black brothers to hold the position. Jackson is the first black ambassador.
Both have been credited with maturing their father and mother, Tonya Lewis Lee, who is a film and television producer.
“We are proud to carry the legacy of our father’s story to draw attention to the communities in our hearts,” said Satchel Lee, who was the creative director of DRØME, a strange and intersectional art and culture magazine.
Satchel chose to partner with Callen-Lorde, an organization that helps health care LGBTQIA + communities in New York. Jackson is partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters, a mentoring network supported by volunteers.
“As a visionary creator, my father taught Satchel and I the importance of entertainment as a cultural catalyst for change,” he said.
Callen-Lorde and Big Brothers Big Sisters will each receive a grant from HFPA for $ 25,000 made on behalf of Lees.
Satchel said the selection of Callen-Lorde and the organization’s healthcare initiatives was important to her in “supporting the LGBT + community, because this is my community. Everything I do, I just have to give back to the people and communities who have given me so much. ”
Jackson said he chose the Big Brothers Big Sisters in an effort to guide them in the same way his father guided them.
“The fact that my father was guiding me changed my life,” he said. “Being able to give someone the opportunity and someone younger than me is a way to pay for it in advance. It seems to me a duty I must do. ”
An ambassador is traditionally the child of a star who attends awards ceremonies, handing out trophies to the winners and accompanying them from the stage.
Former ambassadors include the sons of Pierce Brosnan, Dylan and Paris Brosnan, the daughter of Idris Elba, Isan Elba and Dwayne’s daughter “The Rock”, Simone Garcia.
The Golden Globes ceremony will take place on February 28 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. The show honors achievements in film and television.
