Some iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 models lose their aluminum body color

Some iPhone 12 models have lost the color of their aluminum chassis, according to a new report from Svetapple.sk, which includes photos of a PRODUCT (Red) PRODUCTiPhone 12) model that was visibly colored.

The ‌iPhone 12‌ part next to the power button has faded to a shade of orange and there is a clear boundary in which the red color has been exhausted.

Svetapple.sk says that the iPhone was used in a transparent case, so the friction in one hand was not a factor, although it is not clear if the case itself could have caused the problem.

There have been similar reports of discoloration from iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2 users. MacRumors The t101 reader, for example, distributed photos of an 11‌ PiPhone with a dramatic loss of color on the edges. That “iPhone” model had also been in a transparent case. While many of the reports focused on the “iPhone” red models, the discoloration was less often seen on the “iPhone 11” models in different colors.

some MacRumors readers have speculated that the discoloration is due to exposure to ultraviolet radiation allowed by the clear housing, but the problem would probably be more widespread if it were a problem of UV exposure. It has also been speculated that the problem could be caused by a chemical reaction with a case, but there is no clear explanation.

There are a limited number of reports of discoloration, but this is a problem that seems to have persisted for years, as there are complaints about the iPhone XR. In addition to the ‌iphone 12‌ photos shared by Svetapple.sk, we have not seen similar reports of color loss on other devices ‌iphone 12‌, and this could be a manufacturing defect that is not widespread.

Apple probably considers color discoloration to be a cosmetic issue, so it’s not known if devices that suffer from color loss will be replaced.
