Have you smoked 100 cigarettes in your life? Can you pick up and kick a habit the next day for the next two weeks? Are you able to square up a health professional and lie? I do not accept these things, but if any of the above apply to you and you are a resident of North Carolina, you may be eligible to get your covid-19 vaccine by the end of the month.

Today, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has announced that on March 24, the state will begin opening the vaccine eligibility for group 4, a large area that includes people living in groups, additional employees, and people between the ages of 16 and 64 with a higher risk of medical conditions – including asthma, cancer, and “smoking,” which is defined as after smoking 100 cigarettes in a lifetime. Five packages over a lifetime.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has been appointed Group 4 medical conditions that put people at a higher risk of severe covid-19 disease, as recommended by the CDC:

  • Asthma (moderate to severe)
  • Cancer
  • Cerebrovascular disease or a history of stroke
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Dementia or other neurological condition
  • Type 1 or 2 diabetes
  • Down syndrome
  • A heart condition such as heart failure, coronary heart disease, cardiomyopathy
  • High blood pressure or high blood pressure
  • Immunocompromised condition (weakened immune system) from: immune deficiencies, HIV, administration of chronic steroids or other drugs to weaken immunity, history of blood transplantation of solid organs or bone marrow
  • Liver disease, including hepatitis
  • Pulmonary fibrosis
  • Overweight or obesity
  • Task
  • Sickle disease (excluding sickle cell trait) or thalassemia
  • Smoking (current or previous, defined as smoking at least 100 cigarettes in a lifetime)

Social smoking and pigs are included.

The governor’s office was not immediately available to comment on whether the doctors will use the honor system or whether vaping matters, but does it matter? This could force some people to, say, review CDC finding that smoking is the leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide and for Google permanently lung damage (it’s not good). And then he can check some state health resources.

Starting tomorrow, the state will do it start expanding eligibility for Group 3, who, through their own fault, are essential front-line workers. These include people working in childcare centers, grocery stores, manufacturing, food production, transportation, health care, public safety and government services.

You (me, ahhhckkk-heeehh-ahem) might feel a little less terrible with President Biden ad today that the US could have enough available to vaccinate every American adult by May, going chronologically since July. So you can refrain from those Marlboros.
