“It was a selfish decision. There’s no reason I can give you to give me a second chance. I don’t expect anyone to ever forgive me, but I would like them to at least show me that I learned from it, ‘said Sylar Mack in an interview with GMA.
Mack traveled to the Caribbean island on November 27 and was quarantined for 14 days according to island rules.
But after two days in isolation and a negative COVID-19 test, Mack removed her wrist monitor and broke quarantine to see her friend – a professional jet skier – compete in a race.
“It was a conscious decision … can’t give you a good reason for it,” Mack said.
Mack and her boyfriend, 24-year-old Vanjae Ramreken, who was charged with complicity, were detained and initially sentenced to pay a fine and 40 hours of community service.
But after a legal back and forth, the couple were sentenced to two months in prison, eventually a 32-day sentence.
“I deserved it. I was like, ‘You know what I made this mistake and it’s stupid, you know, but you did it to yourself’,” Mack said.
Until now, Mack has never tested positive for COVID-19 and it seems no one on the beach got sick that day. Mack admits, however, that if something bad had happened, she would have been responsible.
“I could never live with myself knowing that I could have been the reason someone could have been – even if I was just sick, it eats me up.”
Meanwhile, her family is just happy to be safe and back to America.
“I got the first call, I think, that says she was in trouble. Her boyfriend called while the authorities were talking to her,” her grandmother said. You could probably hear him. He kept saying, ‘Please don’t be mad at her. Please don’t be mad at her. And I’m like ‘but she knows better’. ”
Now that her granddaughter is back in America?
“It is the greatest relief that I finally slept through the night,” said her grandmother. “And it’s kind of hard to fall asleep when someone you love so much, you know they don’t sleep, they feel uncomfortable and I know she’s a tough girl, but she had to be scared.”
