Gerry Marsden, the English singer who popularized “You’ll Never Go Alone” (You’ll Never Go Alone), which has become Liverpool’s iconic anthem, died this Sunday at the age of 78announced the British press.

“We receive with great sadness the news of Gerry Marsden’s death,” he wrote Liverpool FC on his Twitter account. “Gerry’s words will forever be etched in our memory.”

Gerry Marsden, born in Liverpool, was the leader of the group Gerry And The Pacemakers in the 1960s and popularized a version of the song “You’ll Never Go Alone,” originally written by American composers Rogers and Hammerstein for the musical “Carousel” from 1945.

Gerry And The Pacemakers’ version was adopted by Liverpool fans in 1963 and later became one of the most famous football anthems. Other clubs such as Celtic Glasgow, Feyenoord and Borussia Dortmund also opted for him.

Gerry Marsden re-recorded the song in April 2020 as a tribute to the British National Health Service during the onset of the new coronavirus pandemic.

Paul McCartney, the former legendary member of The Beatles, who coincided with Marsden and his group in Liverpool in the 1960s, paid tribute to him on his Twitter account: “Gerry has been a companion since our early days in Liverpool. He and his group were our biggest rivals on the local scene“.

“His unforgettable performances in” Never Never Walk Alone “and” Ferry Cross The Mersey “remain in the hearts of many people Memories of a glorious era of British music“, he showed.
