Private defender John Beck, a former NFL quarterback who has spent time with the Miami Dolphins, Baltimore Ravens, Washington Football Team and Houston Texans, has worked with former Ohio quarterback Justin Fields this season. Of course, Fields is the favorite to be ranked 3rd overall by the San Francisco 49ers.

Beck has also worked with Trey Lance of North Dakota and Zach Wilson of BYU.

Matt Barrows of The Athletic wrote a report on Beck this week. The defender who became a coach worked with 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan during their time together in Washington, and the two remain close. This was probably very beneficial, as the Niners continue to gather information about Fields to go with their homework on Trey Lance from North Dakota and Mac Jones from Alabama.

“Knowing I’ve been around (Fields) for the past three months, he’s going to get there and just want to ask questions or talk,” Beck told Athletic. “… I know how he’s going to train defenders. I know what he’s looking for. So I think it’s a slight extension of Kyle in terms of the eyes I have for defenders.”

According to Michael Silver of NFL Media, Beck is not the only Fields-related resource related to Shanahan. Another private coach who has worked with the former Buckeye is Ron Veal (h / t to Patrick Tulini for discovery).

Veal is a member of the original staff of QB Collective, an organization of NFL coaches and experts who work with young quarterbacks. The QB team has ties to Kyle and his father, Mike Shanahan, and Veal remains “heavily involved.”

Jones had been the favorite to land with San Francisco in the draft. However, since Fields training in front of several NFL teams this week, including the 49ers, the Ohio State product now has the best chance of heading to the Bay Area. Fields is also a favorite among fans who would love to see the dynamic passer associated with a brilliant player like Shanahan.

The 2021 NFL project is scheduled to begin on April 29 and will take place in Cleveland, Ohio.
